Job Description

Introduction : Aspen Medical has an exciting opportunity for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to partner with us in providing temporary contracted medical services to Veterans Hospital throughout the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Today’s posting will place you at the primary location of Danville, IL. VAMC. Core Duties:

 
    • Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the MTF Credentials Committee
    • Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient. This includes obtaining informed consent from the patient, requesting consultations and/or diagnostic studies, and ordering pre-anesthetic medications
    • Develop and implement an anesthetic plan of care
    • Perform an assessment immediately before the induction of anesthesia of the patient. This shall include a review of the medical record concerning completeness, pertinent laboratory data, time of administration, and dosage of pre-anesthesia medication, together with an appraisal of any changes in the patient's condition from that noted on previous visits. This note shall include any previous anesthetic experiences and complications thereof noted in the medical record
    • Maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis and correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia and/or surgery
    • Collect and interpret patient physiological data by selecting, applying, or inserting noninvasive monitoring modalities
    • Manage the patient's airway and pulmonary status.
    • Manage the patient's emergence and recovery from anesthesia by maintaining homeostasis, providing relief from pain and anesthesia side effects, and preventing and managing complications through selecting, obtaining, ordering, and administrating medications, fluids, or ventilator support
    • Record all pertinent events taking place during the introduction of, maintenance of, and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, intravenous fluids, and blood or blood components on all patients that have received anesthesia care
    • Record post-anesthetic visits, including at least one note describing the presence or absence of anesthesia-related complications of the procedure
Additional Duties:
  • Remain with the patient as long as required by the patient's condition relative to his/her anesthesia status and until responsibility for proper patient care has been assumed by other qualified individuals. Personnel responsible for post-anesthetic care are to be advised of specific problems presented by the patient's condition
    • Discharge or release from the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) according to established criteria. Provide follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia complications and/or side effects
    • In his/her observation, if the CRNA feels that an anesthetic will put the patient's life in jeopardy, then this condition must be discussed with the operating surgeon or the Head, Anesthesiology Department (or designated representative). The CRNA can rightfully and legally decline to administer an anesthetic to a patient in this category without repercussion. The choice of anesthetic should be discussed with the operating surgeon
    • Check all equipment and agents to be used in the administration of the anesthetic to be sure it is in safe working order. Report all malfunctioning equipment to the Head, Anesthesiology Department or Chief Nurse Anesthetist
    • Check all resuscitative equipment before the beginning of the first (1st) surgery of the day. Any malfunctioning or missing equipment shall be reported to the Head, Anesthesiology Department or Chief Nurse Anesthetist immediately
    • Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Interpret data about the patient's status to identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients, such as interpreting nonverbal communication, safety practices, and medication dosing of Neonates/Pediatrics, enlisting Adolescent patients in treatment, safety and security practices; and recognizing physical limitations, psychosocial needs, age-related. conditions, safety, and medication precautions for geriatrics

Minimum Credentialing Criteria:
  • Education:
    • A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required  
    • Clinical Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nurse Anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant
  • Board Certification:
    • Must be board certified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)
  • License:
    • Must hold a current, valid, unrestricted advanced practice nursing license in one of the U.S. states, territories, commonwealths, or the District of Columbia
  • Experience:
    • A current CV which identifies the providers education and professional qualifications commensurate with CRNA duties and a minimum of one (1) year direct patient care experience as a CRNA within the last three (3) years (VA experience is desirable)
  • Certifications:
    • Current, valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation and undergo urine drug testing
